I’m going to share this in the hopes that it will be enlightening to anyone who is confused about what rape is. I can’t imagine why anyone would be, but when I heard Ariel Castro’s statement today, my jaw fell to the goddamned FLOOR. Apparently Ariel Castro himself (who after being a practitioner of it for over 11 years, one would reasonably consider a “rape expert” by now) doesn’t understand what it is.
Forcing someone to have sex with you against their will is not “sex addiction.” It is an act of violence. Women are not raped because they are pretty, women are raped because their wishes do not matter to the rapist. Castro essentially said, “I’m not a violent person, I just kept the women in my house so they couldn’t get away.” And I don’t think it’s an attitude or understanding that belongs to just him or other rapists. I really think there might be people out there who don’t see the connection.
The Stubenville photographs of those guys dragging around the rape victim while smiling and laughing are the same attitude and understanding. They do not see that what they were doing was an ACT OF VIOLENCE. And the reason why is that the subjugation, disrespect, and exploitation of women is so rampant and pervasive that unless it’s an extreme case, a huge population of people don’t recognize it as violence and assualt.
Sometimes people need to be reminded that women are not public property.
The mindset of the Stubenville rapists: “I’m not a bad guy, I just had sex with a girl when she was passed out” and Ariel Castro: “I’m not a monster, I’m a sex addict who just forced these women to service me whenever I wanted it for eleven years.”
And when you see things like the first link here from Glee (of course!) and when you absorb the fact that mainstream America is exposed to things like it, all the time, I want you to see the connection between Ariel Castro, Stubenville, and this clip from Glee. The clip is of a character who is supposed to be 16 having a sex fantasy about her dentist. Right before he puts her under, she makes a joke about how it would be okay with her if he “had his way with her” while she was out. Yeah. It was on FUCKING GLEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Little girls watch this show for god’s sake! AND ADULT MEN.
Do you read me?
Watch these two links please, and talk about this with anyone who you feel needs some enlightening, be it girls or boys, women or men.
Thank you for your attention,
